We Take a Functional Medicine Approach to Your Wellness and to your Heart Health
Our providers run a comprehensive set of labs prior to your first appointment with us. When you visit us for the first time, we will spend 2 hours with you.
During this time, we will discuss your personal and family health history with you. We will also go over your labs with you, line by line.
Our providers take a Functional Medicine approach with our patients, which means that we take the time to get to know you and your health. We also use scientific-based labs to uncover the root causes of symptoms and diseases.
Your initial lab panel can provide you with a comprehensive look at your overall health and risk factors. We will check hormone levels, key vitamin levels, CBC, CMP, and a full thyroid check. Also included in your lab panel are some markers that can help identify risk for heart disease so that action can be taken now to make any necessary changes for heart health and prevention.
Lab Panels Will Include:
- C-reactive protein – this test can be a marker of how much you are at risk for developing cardiovascular problems. According to Johns Hopkins Medical, “C-reactive protein can be an indicator of the development of atherosclerosis (laying down of cholesterol inside the blood vessel walls) is associated with inflammation within the vessel walls.”
- Homocysteine – there are vitamins such as B12, B6, and folate that help to break down homocysteine to make other chemicals that your body needs. High levels of homocysteine can indicate that you are not getting the vitamins that you need for this to happen. Without treatment, high levels of homocysteine increase your risk for heart disease, stroke, and dementia. To learn more about homocysteine, click here to read an article published by the Cleveland clinic.
- Lipids – cholesterol levels.
- Hemoglobin A1C – indicator for Type 2 Diabetes
- Insulin – high levels of insulin can be a precursor for Type 2 Diabetes, inflammation levels, and diseases associated with the cardiovascular system.
The First Step
Our providers understand that learning that you are at a higher risk for heart disease can be scary. We want to assure you that it doesn’t have to be.
Our goal is to empower you to understand what is going on with your body. This is the first step towards better health, prevention, and wellness!
We are here to educate you and guide you in the right direction so that you can live a long and healthy life.
If you need a referral to another, more-specialized physician, we can provide you with that information. And we are willing to work with them to ensure that you are getting the best care possible.
Often times though, there are smaller changes that can be made to reduce risk, and knowing these things can put your mind at ease.
The Cardio IQ™
If your medical history and labs indicate that you have a higher risk for heart disease, we can order a more advanced test prior to your next appointment with us. Quest Diagnostics offers an in-depth lab test called the Cardio IQ.
Quest Diagnostics explains further:
One factor is the size and number of the cholesterol particles. As a somewhat simplistic explanation, small particles are more likely to get stuck in the walls of your blood vessels. Larger ones tend not to.
There are a number of blood tests on the market that actually measure and count your small and large LDL and HDL cholesterol particles, and assign risk accordingly. One such test is the CardioIQ® Lipid Panel.
Each Cardio IQ test comes with access to the 4MyHeart program which includes a phone consultation with a Clinical Educator to help you understand the results and get advice about how to improve your numbers.”
Your provider at Forum Health Las Colinas can also explain your results to you in more detail. Additionally, our providers can also provide education and support about how to further reduce your risk.
Lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, and medications (if applicable) may also be recommended. In addition, there are five supplements that we recommend to keep your cardiovascular system in check.
Supplements for Heart Health
We recommend the following Xymogen supplements to support a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. Xymogen products are the highest-quality pharmaceutical-grade formulas in the industry.
Omega Mono Pure™ 650 EC and 1300 EC – features a monoglyceride fish oil that supports cardiovascular health, healthy mental function, and healthy glucose and insulin metabolism.
NiaVasc™ – this is a sustained-release niacin, so you should not experience any “flushing” that can accompany a lesser-quality niacin product. This supports the maintenance of healthy lipids. According to Xymogen, “niacin is one of the most studied and documented nutrients for support of lipid levels, especially high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.”
Optimag 125™ – supports cardiovascular health, healthy nerve and muscle function, bone health, energy production, and glucose metabolism.
Red Yeast Rice™ – supports cardiovascular health, healthy blood lipid levels, and promotes healthy cholesterol levels within normal range.
CoQmax™ Omega – supports the health and function of the cardiovascular system, maintains plasma/tissue CoQ10 levels, and is a Monoglyceride fish oil for 3x greater absorption of EPA and DHA. CoQmax Ubiquinol™ is another product that Xymogen offers that provides cardiovascular support, neurologic and cognitive support, and antioxidant activity. It also neutralizes superoxide and other free radicals. |
